Season of Emancipation, Emancipation Day significant

Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are leading the way in the Caribbean by observing a Season of Emancipation and not just commemorating one day.

Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong says August 1st – Emancipation Day, is significant to the region as it’s a high point of Caribbean history and identity.

The season is in full swing in Barbados, having commenced on April 14th – the anniversary of the Bussa Slave Rebellion and will run until late August.

Special Envoy in the Prime Minister’s Office on Reparations and Economic Enfranchisement, Trevor Prescod, has played a part in the addition of the Kilombo Emancipation Village, located at Haggatt Hall, St. Michael.

It opened on May 31st and will continue until August 17th, with a range of events including cultural presentations, sporting competitions, craft displays and food.

Mr. Prescod is upbeat about its addition to the island’s calendar of events.
