Flying fish industry impacted by sargassum influxes

The influx of sargassum seaweed is having a major impact on Barbados’ flying fish industry.

While stock assessments have not been conducted, Chief Fisheries Officer, Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox says landings of flying fish have decreased by 51% since the start of sargassum inflows in 2011.

She says this is a significant development and links it to climate change.

The information was shared during an Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea at the United Nations in New York.

Dr. Cox also queried how other countries confronted the matter, and perceptions related to fishing and eating fish, particularly among young people.
