Gwen Torrence Reveals Her Drive to Outrun Merlene Ottey

Gwendolyn Lenna Torrence is a retired American sprinter and Olympic champion.
In the early 1990s, Torrence was among the world’s top sprinters, winning five Olympic medals, including three golds. She also earned medals at the World Championships (both indoor and outdoor), Pan American Games, Goodwill Games, and World University Games.

Torrence tied with Evelyn Ashford in the 55m race at the 1988 U.S. National Indoor Championships and had notable rivalries, particularly with Florence Griffith Joyner. At the 1995 World Championships, she was disqualified in the 200m for stepping out of her lane, resulting in Merlene Ottey being awarded first place.

In 2000, Torrence was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
