The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) Standing With Jamaica – Hurricane Melissa
For more than four decades, AFJ has served as a bridge between Jamaica and its global supporters, standing ready to provide emergency relief and long-term rebuilding assistance when crises strike.
AFJ has activated its Disaster Relief Fund and is working in close coordination with trusted partners to mobilize an immediate response. The organization is partnering with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) to airlift critical aid and supplies from Doral, Florida to affected areas as soon as possible once the airports reopen.
In Jamaica, AFJ is collaborating with the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), Food For The Poor Jamaica, JetBlue and the Sanmerna Foundation to ensure coordinated response systems and readiness on the ground.
AFJ’s Board of Directors has moved swiftly to establish a Hurricane Melissa Response Task Force, convening daily to guide coordination, donor outreach, and partnerships. The AFJ’s proactive leadership ensures that its efforts are strategic, transparent, and aligned with Jamaica’s national response. Additionally, AFJ Board of Directors have committed US$1M towards a match – every dollar raised from the AFJ Disaster Relief Fund up to $1M will be matched to double the impact of your donations.
The AFJ Disaster Relief Fund will provide immediate support to trusted local partners following landfall to aid in relief and recovery efforts. This fund has previously supported hurricane response operations across the Caribbean, including Beryl, Maria, Irma, and Dean.
