In the final part of Living in Shacks: The Downtown Kingston Story, Kelesha Williams examines possible solutions to the city’s housing crisis and asks what it will take to bring people back to the heart of Kingston.
Architects and urban planners discuss the importance of mixed-income and mixed-use development, affordable housing and incentives for property owners to repair and rehabilitate existing buildings.
The programme explores how new developments could accommodate more families while making better use of limited land in Kingston, including apartments, townhouses, multi-story housing and smaller developments on vacant lots.
Experts also discuss the possibility of incorporating green spaces and shared courtyards into higher-density housing, while addressing the realities of crime and security in downtown communities.
The documentary looks at the potential for private developers, government agencies and property owners to work together, while highlighting the need for downtown development to serve different economic groups.
Ultimately, the documentary returns to the reality faced by residents living in shacks and dilapidated buildings and asks whether meaningful change will finally reach them.
