By BBN Staff: Around the Caribbean, health officials are planning to increase COVID-19 testing capacity after the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) announced that all air passengers to the US will require a negative test within 72 hours of departure.
As it is, Caribbean nations face a strain over COVID-19 testing resources.
The new measure goes into effect on January 26.
Jamaica has named a special task force and Belize tourism officials have indicated that they will expand testing for those travelers to the US.
According to Reuters, a spokesperson for Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association said that the testing rules are a “tremendous challenge”.
This is due to lack of testing equipment and lab facilities to meet the large demand in short turnaround times.
The Caribbean is very important for U.S. carriers like American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta as well as for low-cost carriers like Southwest Airlines and Spirit Airlines.
