Jamaican National Championships 2023 preview: Full schedule and how to

Athletes to watch at the Jamaica National Championships

Short-sprint legend, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will launch her bid for a record-extending sixth world women’s 100m title after she spearheaded a Jamaican clean sweep at last year’s global championships. Fraser-Pryce dipped at the line in 10.67 seconds edging teammates Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah into second and third place, respectively. The trio shared the podium for a historic first medal sweep in the women’s 100m at the world championships.

Fraser-Pryce is expected to make her return to the track after she was forced to withdraw from her season’s opener at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi in May. The 36-year-old has a wild card entry to the world championships as the defending champion.

In a recent interview with Black Enterprise, she shared how the knee injury forced her to go back to the “drawing board”.

“No two years are ever the same. You plan and you work and hope everything falls into place. Last year I had so much fun, in Eugene and just being able to consistently run 10.6 and to be able to build on that. However I had a hiccup, a little disappointment in Kenya to open my season that didn’t happen.I was left disappointed as I was trying to go back to the drawing board and making sure everything was going good with my knee,” said Fraser-Price who also posted photos on her social media running with taped knee.

“I am in a much better place. I have been able to tweak somethings that I really needed to work on and nail down. I think it’s been going good…I know this year is going to be amazing!” – Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to Black Enterprise.

“I knew coming out in outdoor season is going to require more of me, not just mentally but physically as well. I wanted to be in good spirit. But so far, training has been going great.”
