Armand Duplantis was beaten at his home stadium in Stockholm, with the world record holder readily admitting that Sam Curtis deserved the win "fair and square." He was clear that he wanted no excuses to overshadow his opponent’s performance.
Duplantis attributed the loss purely to his own mental state, saying he felt "pretty unfocused" on the day. Despite being in good physical shape, he acknowledged that any lapse in concentration is costly against a rival of Curtis’s level.
Adding a personal touch, Duplantis noted he is getting married in about a week, joking that losing at home may be the universe signalling his commitment to love — referencing a Swedish saying about being lucky in games or lucky in love, and expressing hope the latter holds "probably forever."
While he called losing in Stockholm in front of family and friends "actually the worst thing that could ever happen to me" — his first defeat in roughly three years — he said he felt no self-pity, only sympathy for the supporters present. Rather than dwell on the result, he planned to take visiting family members out to enjoy the city, noting he felt less anger than expected given the significant life events surrounding him.
