Welcome extended to Liberians on Sankofa Pilgrimage

"Welcome back home!"

This message was conveyed by Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong as Barbados hosts hundreds of Liberians and other Africans of Barbadian ancestry for a special Sankofa Pilgrimage.

The event promises to strengthen ties, raise awareness, and celebrate the 159th anniversary of the Barbadian settlers’ journey to Liberia.

Several activities are in store, including the laying of a commemorative plaque in recognition of the moment when the Brig Cora sailed from Bridgetown to Monrovia, Liberia, on April 6, 1865, and a special genealogy marketplace.

Ambassador Comissiong says through the pilgrimage, Barbados is extending its borders eastwards.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Llewellyn Witherspoon, who organised the trip in collaboration with the Government of Barbados says a global team was put together to make the pilgrimage a reality.

He says Barbados is gaining traction internationally and there’s excitement among participants.
